We encourage you to have an excellent quality diet. It is important to eat a well balanced diet that contains plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, legumes and nuts. Restrict your carbohydrates and sugary foods intake. Avoid fast foods, which typically can have high fat, sugar and/or refined carbohydrate content and are usually of minimal nutritional benefit.
Low fat milk is better than full cream milk. Restrict your alcohol intake to a minimum and try to discontinue smoking if possible.
Listeria infection while rare can have a devastating impact on a pregnancy. Food care and personal hygiene are the best ways to minimise the risk. Be very careful with your own personal hygiene and encourage others to do the same. Freshly prepared and freshly cooked foods are the safest. Ensure meat is well cooked. All hot food should be piping hot. The following foods are safe to eat in pregnancy: washed fruit and vegetables, home made salads, hard cheese, processed cheese, canned foods, and all meats which are thoroughly cooked, hot and fresh and pasteurised diary products.
Common sense with food is recommended. While pregnancy does not imply a greater risk of food poisoning, the risks of food poisoning are greater than if you were not pregnant. Pay attention to your personal hygiene and that of others, choice of food, food preparation and choice of restaurants when you eat out.
