Should my son be circumcised?
Circumcision of a male is the surgical procedure where the foreskin of the penis is removed.
As a newborn it is done for religious reasons and social reasons. The most popular social reason is for conformity of the penis appearance with dad and other male family members, etc. Occasionally it needs to be done later for medical reasons. In Australia the popularity has declined, since it was realised that routine circumcision of the male could no longer be advocated for medical reasons. That it is done infrequently should be taken into consideration when deciding what to do. Peer group pressure is strong. You son, when he is older, may prefer to look like his peers rather than his father
As an operation it does carry some surgical risk and also there is the chance that the newborn son may not agree with his parents' decision when he has grown up. It is most likely for this reason than most obstetricians today do not provide this as a personal service for the sons of their patients.
Will you circumcise my son if I request it?
In contrast to most of my colleagues I do offer this service to my patients. I am personally available to circumcise your baby son if it is your request. This is as long as your baby has no medical contraindications and the procedure is organised to be done in the first six weeks of life. The best time to inquire about circumcision is the day after your delivery. I will then discuss the matter in detail with you. You will need to sign the hospital consent form for your son as it is an operation.
I use the
Plastibell techniques which is the safest surgical technique option.
