Skin Changes after Childbirth

When will my skin get back to normal?

Initially for most women the skin of the abdominal wall feels loose and dry. Pigmentation changes persist and occasionally are even worse. Some women will experience stretch marks which occasionally are only apparent right at the end of the pregnancy.

What can be done?

  • To an extent the elasticity of the skin is restored. You are encouraged to try and tone up your abdominal wall muscles with an exercise program. The liberal use of a moisturiser and drinking adequate amounts of water can also help.Sometimes the overstretching is considerable and only the help of a cosmetic surgeon will help. Such an appointment should be deferred until your family is complete to avid undoing the good result with another pregnancy.
  • Pigmentation changes can persist particularly while breastfeeding, though they should subsequently settle over time.
  • Stretch marks won't go away but they will be less obvious over time. It is likely they will not get worse in a subsequent pregnancy.
