Weight Gain

What is normal weight gain in pregnancy?

The usual weight gain in pregnancy is 10-12 kilos, which works out to approximately a kilo and a bit every month. Weight gain patterns vary though. Larger women tend to gain less weight than this.

Excess weight gain has an association with large babies, gestational diabetes and hypertension problems in pregnancy. But for most women there are no pregnancy complications.

The main reason for watching your weight is that the more weight you put on the more weight you have to take off to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight once the pregnancy is over.

What can be done?

Adequate exercise and attention to diet.

If you are doing your best don't get stressed. Remember some weight gain will be due to fluid retention, which will go after you have your baby.
