What happened to my ankles?

Fluid Retention in PregnancyFluid retention is common as the pregnancy advances. Fluid retention can result in significant weight gain and can make you feel more uncomfortable in pregnancy. Occasionally it will be a problem even in the first trimester. Leg swelling is usually worse at the end of the day.

Fluid retention in the hands can cause numbness or pins and needles in the hands (called carpal tunnel syndrome). Fluid retention in the hands is worse on waking up in the morning.

Excessive fluid retention can be the cause of excessive weight gain in pregnancy

What can be done?

Be reassured it will get better after you have your baby, though sometimes fluid retention is worse immediately after the birth.

Elevation of legs as much as possible, wearing support stockings and comfortable shoes are the best ways for coping with swelling in your legs.

Fluid retention in the hands can be temporarily relieved by leaving your hands in water for a prolonged period. Sometimes special splints are needed. Occasionally release of carpal tunnel surgery is needed.

With marked hand swelling your rings will get tight. Sometimes wedding rings, etc have to be cut off. We suggest you remove them before this becomes a problem.
