Is baby brain real?
Also called “placental brain”, studies have shown that pregnancy impairs memory for up to 80 per cent of pregnant women and new mothers.
Pregnant women can have impaired cognitive ability, particularly increased forgetfulness and poor memory and concentration. A pregnant woman is more likely to miss an important appointment or get lost while driving in their own neighbourhood. There has been reported even poor spelling, forgetting words, etc. Any woman who has recently given birth can likely tell you a bizarre instance of absent-mindedness.
The cause is not known. Theories include hormonal changes, busyness, tiredness and sleep deprivation.
What can be done about it?
Relax and try not to stress about it! It is real. It can last for up to a year after your baby’s birth but you will get your memory and sanity back.
- Try to get as much rest and support as possible.
- Tell people that you are pregnant and have “baby brain”, so they understand and know what they can expect.
- Tell your boss at work and work colleagues so they understand what is happening to you and can help you compensate for it
- Tell your husband/partner what is happening so he can be more supportive.
- Try not to take on too much. Don’t start new projects while pregnant if possible and try to avoid making important decisions.
- Keep notes.
